4 Types of Terms.

Terminology: There is confusion as to what 'lateral' terms means. 'Lateral' terms are ALL the results of a lateral search. But we only want SOME of them because most are irrelevant. I will call the relevant ones 'starting' terms because they are what we start the blueprint with by entering them into the popularity search to get the 'scored' terms. From the 'scored' terms we select those relevant to the topic i.e. the 'blueprint' terms. So there are 4 different types of terms and it could be a bit confusing that is why I giving these definitions:- 'lateral' terms all the results of a lateral search 'starting' terms relevant 'lateral' terms 'scored' terms all the results of a popularity search 'blueprint' terms topic related 'scored' terms The complete set of 'starting' terms may require several lateral searches. First do lateral searches for all the obvious 'starting' terms you can think of about the topic. In this case you might try 'tires' and 'tyres'. Find any fresh 'starting' terms and then also enter these as lateral searches too and look for yet more fresh 'starting' terms. This is a 'feedback' technique in which you are looking for the complete set of 'starting' terms.
There are 4 different types of terms in all this, 'LATERAL', 'STARTING', 'SCORED', and 'BLUEPRINT'. I am go to refer to them below like that to try to keep things clear. The 'STARTING' terms are a small subset of the 'LATERAL' terms. You start the blueprint with the 'STARTING' terms by entering each one into the popularity search box. This produces the 'SCORED' terms that we use to get the 'BLUEPRINT' for the blueprint. The 'BLUEPRINT' terms are a subset of the 'SCORED' terms. You might ask - how do I know if I have got most/all the 'SCORED' terms I can about the topic? This question is fundamental to understanding the 'STARTING' terms. For example if you just start with 'Tv Sets' and enter into the popularity search box you will get these 'SCORED' terms:- tv sets 59 56 compare tv sets 16 15 best tv sets 11 10 tv sets 1960 10 10 TV sets 10 10 antique tv sets 8 8 TV Tray sets 6 6 . . etc This is not much good I think you will agree. So just using 'tv sets' as the only 'STARTING' term gets us nowhere. What do we do then? All we can do is try and get or think of some more 'STARTING' terms. Well you can probably think of 'tvs' and 'televisions' and a few more but how do you know if you got them all or even most of them. That is where the lateral search comes in because it checks hundreds of web pages for common words found that are associated with 'tv sets'. These are the 'LATERAL' terms but not all of them are good for us as 'STARTING' terms as you will see. Most are irrelevant because they are not about the topic. So let's lok at the 'LATERAL' terms for 'tv sets':- 1. tv sets 2. television 3. news 4. the 5. digital 6. newspaper 7. hdtv 8. screen 9. media 10. consumer 11. sets 12. vcr 13. radio 14. rca 15. monitor 16. televisions . . etc If you are unsure which of the above 'LATERAL' terms to include as 'STARTING' terms, then click on them to see the 'SCORED' terms. ASIDE ----- Clicking on a 'LATERAL' term produces a list on the right hand side and this list is the 'SCORED' terms for what you clicked. It is the same as entering the 'LATERAL' term in the recommended popularity search. BACK TO THE POINT ----------------- You can now see if the 'SCORED' terms includes anything on the topic that we can use in the blueprint, i.e. any 'BLUEPRINT' terms. Thus each 'LATERAL' term may generate some 'BLUEPRINT' terms or it may not. If not: then the 'LATERAL' term can be ignored. If yes: then the 'LATERAL' term may be added to the list of 'STARTING' terms but ONLY IF some of it's 'BLUEPRINT' terms were not generated by previous 'STARTING' terms. This point is important. So using this logic on the few above I think the following should be 'STARTING' terms:- television hdtv screen (generates 'plasma screen' and 'big screen tvs' ...?) I didn't do any more, I'll leave that to you. IMPORTANT NOTE -------------- Each new 'STARTING' term should be fed back into the lateral search to see if even more 'STARTING' terms can be found. So you need to do lateral searches for 'television', 'hdtv' and 'screen' plus all those other ones you came up with. > I was unsure whether or not to include plurals - so I have included > them in the list below for now. Could you tell me whether you would only > cover singular terms or singular and plurals? Plurals and singular are equivalent in that they give the same popularity scored results if you are using the recommended popularity url. Just try it to see. It is the scored popularity results we are interested in the end since they generate the blueprint. If you use a bit more trial and error you could maybe get a better understanding. Unfortunately in the recommended popularity url 'tv' and 'tvs' are taken as the same whereas they are quite different for our purposes being that 'tvs' is specifically 'tv sets' but 'tv' isn't, also this applies to 'television' and 'televisions'. It may be that in this case we need to use one of the other wordtracker urls for the popularity search, i.e. one that distinguishes between singular/plural. > Tv sets > > Tv > Tv?s > Television > Televisions > Television sets > Sony > Philips > Samsung > Sharp > Panasonic > Toshiba > Lcd > Broadcast > Broadcasting > NTSC Please don't use the ' in tv's it might cause problems with Plexel New page or on the server later.
