- Quite a lot of help on Plexel and making websites.
There have been recent complaints about paintshoppro8.com and the site had to be closed temporarily after the warning of our server owners. There are various aspects of this problem:- 1. General mission statement The overall objective is to save the users the time of doing google (or other search engine) searches for various phrases (page titles) that we cover. The idea is that we do the work for them and produce overall information and links to the top sites that cover the phrase best. You are allowed to copy snippets of information from various sources but please put a link to each of those sources. You have the option of putting the text in your own words if you want to cover a topic rigorously. The idea of this information is also to catch hits from the search engines and to improve our ranking for the particular page title. 2. Fair Use You are allowed to copy some information. This is part of the 'fair use' allowance in copyright law for news reports, reviews, and the like. We also have to be seen as reporters or reviewers unless you do new work in your own words and ideas. It is much better if you take small pieces of information from several websites for each of the pages you do. Therefore I am raising the minimum number of external links required per page from 1 to 2. If you copy over complete works intending to rival the original then we are breaking copyright law. 3. Hotlinking This is where programs etc on other sites are referred to in our pages as an external link e.g. Download the program This causes the program or image etc to be downloaded directly from our page and the user never sees the host site. A lot of people object strongly to this as 'stealing' bandwidth although I am not aware of any law against it. Anyway, instead we can put a link to the host site page where it is downloaded from. We don't really lose much with this except the user would have to go through more hoops to get the download and could be annoyed at that. There were a lot of complaints about this. Images can also be hotlinked e.g. . This should never be done since it does indeed use the bandwidth of another server to make our page. Plexel anyway grabs and copies in images and this is a better strategy anyway. 4. Images I would think it comes under the 'fair use' exemption to be able to copy over a couple of images per page (from different sites) just to make the information more presentable unless the images expressely contain something against this fair use. 5. Criticising other sites I don't expect this will come up but if you were actually criticising some other site you can copy what you like.
