- Quite a lot of help on Plexel and making websites.
Duplicate Pages. Main page for duplicates. Aka DUP, duplicates.
These are pages with the same meaning as another page yet with a different title. e.g. making tea tea making how to make tea One will have the highest wordtracker score. That is the 'real' page. The others are duplicates with the same content but every correct occurence of the title replaced with the duplicate title. See also the link in col3. The Make Duplicates facility of the Utilities menu has now been added. SEE BOX AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Not Duplicates
- Titles that may be nearly the same but are not duplicates.
Duplicates
- Pages that are the same except for occurences of the title
Sun 10 Jul 2005 14:55 - Duplicate Pages linked to Duplicates. You use it by first entering all the duplicates for the source Display page using Edit + Duplicates (one per line) Then you use Utility + Make Duplicates + OK or Utility + Make Duplicates + Throughout folder + OK ---------another email----------- Previously I said:- >I found it good to LINKTO some duplicates in table football. >This won't cause major problems so we should allow it. In >which case you should make all the duplicates this time or >you won't be able to link to them. Just leave them blank >for the moment until I have added to Plexel. Having thought about it this can cause problems. Duplicates will be updated when the original is updated and this will wipe out the link in (duplicate page) col1 to any page that has LINKTO to the duplicate. No problem you might think but unfortunately if you later decide to delete the duplicate for some reason then Plexel won't be able to delete the link in col3 of the page that linked to the duplicate. So you will be left with a dead link which is not good. In short, if you want to link to a duplicate, then link to the original page instead. -----another email----- > After just reading through your e-mail about doing 'LINKTO' which I can > understand, you then said about doing the 'DUP'. I was just wondering > what I have to do with the DUP's. As I just thought there duplicates, > and won't need to be added as there's already a page containing that > sort of information. > > Could you please tell me what I will have to do with the 'DUP' pages. I am writing an improvement to Plexel to handle the duplicates automatically so it is not essential to make them now, however you can if you want to. I was going to allow LINKTO to duplicates but on thinking about it not a good idea and best to LINKTO to the page the duplicate is duplicating. Some confusion may have crept in over this change of mind. The duplicate is essentially a copy of the original with all the correct occurrences of the original title replaced with the duplicate title. People search the net using different phrases for the same thing they are looking for and we want to catch all those different phrases so we have to make pages for them all. The duplicates only appear in the A-Z index. This entry in the index allows the search engines to find them and add them to the searcdh engine database which in turn allows people to find them and our hits to go up. -------------another email------------ > Could you please explain to me what I will have to do with the DUP's as > I don't see any use for them? As there duplicate names. People may search for something using several different phrases like Tea Making Making Tea How to Make Tea When they search using any of these we want them to come to our site. If the search engine knows we have a page for each of these phrases then it can send them to us. So we make three pages about the same thing. We choose one of the three as the 'real' page. This one is the one with the highest wordtracker score say for example 'tea making'. The others we make as copies of it BUT with occurences of the phrase replaced by the duplicate phrase. So we get three files:- Tea_Making.htm Making_Tea.htm How_To_Make_Tea.htm All appear in the A-Z index but only Tea_Making.htm appears say in col3 of the homepage or in the clickboard. For the file Making_Tea.htm we take Tea_Making.htm content and replace occurences of 'Tea Making' with 'Making Tea'. So now we have a page specifically targetted for the phrase 'Making Tea'. You could do all this manually but don't make the duplicates yet because I am writing an automatic way to do it. Duplicates are believed to be a valuable source of extra traffic. DUP OF DUP PROBLEM ------------------ It came up that we couldn't find any info on the page 'Harvard Nxg Foosball'. Instead of just deleteing it we made it a duplicate. Please see the Updated and Original blueprint sections below for how to do this sort of thing. Also, 'Harvard Nxg Foosball Tables' was previously a DUP of 'Harvard Nxg Foosball' but now has to become a DUP of 'Harvard Foosball Table' since you can't have a DUP of a DUP. I'd like to keep the blueprints up to date with what's happening on the sites. You can't do a lot of things with them that you normally can like linking and making new pages off them since they are just amended copies of the original pages. Duplicates only appear in the A-Z index. This is to allow google to find them. There are no other links to them because that would be confusing with multiple near copies of the same page easily browsable. Duplicates should be automatically ignored by things like Spread Summary and Replace Template. If you have to do something like Replace the Template throughout the folder then you would need to Make Duplicates throughout folder again afterwards in order to update the duplicates. The same is true for replacing the clickboard globally.
