Secure Email S/MIME Thawte. Procedure for setup of S/MIME Thawte free personal email certificates and use with SeaMonkey or IE and Outlook. Comodo is a much simpler setup, and it can be imported from Internet Explorer into Firefox and Seamonkey. Comodo can be put into Internet Explorer (Using Comodo setup), exported, and then imported into SeaMonkey or Firefox. To do, you first setup the certificate in IE, then use the "Export" option to save the certificate (with the private key) to a file and then "Import" that file into SeaMonkey under the certificate section. See below for Thawte procedure and SeaMonkey setup. There are quite a lot of steps. The Thawte process should take about 30 minutes. THAWTE ACCOUNT SETUP -------------------- 1. Start the browser you use for email. If Outlook start IE. 2. Go to https://www.thawte.com/cgi/enroll/personal/step1.exe, NEXT 3. Fill in name, dob, and nationality, NEXT 4. Enter email address, NEXT 5. NEXT 6. Enter a very secure password for your Thawte account, NEXT 7. Enter 5 questions and answers, NEXT 8. NEXT [They will send an email] CONFIRM YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS [follow their email procedure] -------------------------- LOGIN AND REQUEST A CERTIFICATE ------------------------------- 1. Go to https://www.thawte.com/cgi/personal/contents.exe 2. Enter your ID which is the email address in capitals, and password to login. 3. Click certificates 4. Click request a certificate 5. REQUEST, opens a popup window. 6. Select browser (Mozilla for SeaMonkey), REQUEST 7. NEXT 8. Tick the email address you want a certificate for. 9. NEXT 10. ACCEPT 11. NEXT [now generates certificate] 12. FINISH and then close popup window. FETCH CERTIFICATE AND INSTALL IN BROWSER ---------------------------------------- 13. Click view certificate status [needs to be issued not pending] 14. Click Navigator [if using SeaMonkey] next to the date it was issued. 15. Scroll to bottom of page. 16. Click Fetch [This should install cert in browser even if nothing happens] That's it. Now you need to setup SeaMonkey to use the newly installed certificate. CHECK CERT IS IN SEAMONKEY -------------------------- 1. Click Edit, then Preferences, then Privacy & Security. 2. Click Certificates, then Manage Certificates. See the entry headed Thawte Freemail... 3. Click OK, now click Master Passwords and set the Master Password Timeout to suit you. SELECT CERTIFICATE FOR SEAMONKEY EMAIL ACCOUNT ---------------------------------------------- 1. Open Mail & Newsgroups window 2. Click Edit, then Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings. 3. Click 'Security' for the account of the email address in question. 4. Make sure 'Digitally sign messages' is ticked 5. Click top 'Select' 6. Select with drop down box till you see the email address in the big box below, OK 7. Take the option to use it for encryption too. 8. Tick 'Required' box. [for management email we should all use encrypted] ========== PROCEDURE FINISHED ============= ADDING OTHER EMAIL ADDRESSES ---------------------------- 1. Login to Thawte account, Personal E-mail Certificates 2. Click my emails 3. Click new email address 4. Enter email address, NEXT 5. Use the same procedure as above for confirming email address and everthing else following except don't tick the 'Required' box Step 8 since that is only for management email.
