THE PUSSCATS.COM BLUEPRINT EXAMPLE ---------------------------------- In the meantime you could have a go at making the site blueprint which is the first step anyway before editing or adding anything. Once the blueprint is done then you can start making the site. To do the blueprint we use a facility called wordtracker. Go to http://wordtracker.com and login. Then try and follow the info below. I know this isn't easy but the way we do it is just keep firing email questions at me. Obviously it can be a bit frustrating with the time it takes to reply but it's the best system we've got at present. This is a 'rough and ready' system not perfect by any means. Just ask questions if you don't get anything. Everyone so far has picked it all up eventually even with no prior experience. BLUEPRINTS AND MAKING PAGES. ADVICE ON MAKING THE BLUEPRINT --------------------------------- Guess on the primary word or phrase for your website. Login to wordtracker and take the 'Keyword Universe' option. Enter your main word in the Step1 box. Wait for the 'Lateral' results and scroll down to see if there are any other lateral terms that you need to cover. For all these terms click on the term and wait for the right hand list. Use all these lists to make the blueprint like the example below, arranged in logical and score order, usually higher scores to the top. Decide on approximately how many pages you want in the site and make yourself a threshold score only including terms above that score. Use the 'Dig' feature to help you structure the site. Out of all the lateral terms you find for the topic you usually pick the one with the highest score for the final primary term. This will appear at the top of the homepage. When making the pages start with the 'make New from homepage' ones first from the top down. Then do the 'make New from here' ones from the top down. Finally, after all the pages are made then do the 'link to this' page links. Do not make the duplicates. The blueprint may be modified accordingly as you go. After the wordtracker research is done you need to apply common sense to see how to structure the site. Also, you need to work out what goes in the clickboard, usually the top 25 or so scoring terms. The clickboard can have several headings if needed. Lateral terms are 'Kitten', 'Feline', 'Kitty' and 'Spay' Primary word is 'Cat'. A high threshold of 407 was set and the only lateral term giving results above this was 'Kittens'. Together with the primary term 'Cat' the blueprint was constructed from these two. 3. ADVICE ON MAKING THE PAGES USING THE BLUEPRINT ------------------------------------------------- LEVEL-1 topics (make New from Homepage) ------------------------------ You should be able to work directly from the blueprint (example see below) working your way down from the most important (non-indented) main topics first. So from the homepage you should make New in this order reading straight down the blueprint non-indented items:- kittens (ignore since already made) cat names (ignore since already made) cat pictures kitten pictures cat health cat breeds kitten care cat care ragdoll cats cat furniture cat behavior cat food felix the cat big cats hobie cat cat toys cat problems cat pictures breeds cat in the hat fisher cat LEVEL-2 topics (make New here) ------------------------------ Now start from the top of the blueprint again and go down looking for 'make New here' entries. The first one you come to is 'kitten natividad' from the 'kittens' page. So go to the 'kittens' page and make a new page called 'kitten natividad' from there. Now moving on you come to 'kitten names' so make that new from the 'kittens' page too. Further on there is 'female cat names' from the 'cat names' page, so now go to the 'cat names' page and make a new page called 'female cat names' from there. Carry on this procedure until you finish with 'calico cats' made new from the 'cat breeds' page. You may be able to see the website taking on a definite hierarchical structure now roughly in terms of popularity. LEVEL-3 topics etc ------------------- There are no deeper levels in this small site. LINKING PAGES (link to this) ---------------------------- Please now go back to the top and work down again looking for 'link to this' entries. You first come to 'kitten pictures' from the 'kittens' page. Notice that 'kitten pictures' has already been made from the homepage but it makes sense to link to it too from the 'kittens' page. I think link to pages wherever it makes sense to do so. To do this first right click on the 'Kitten Pictures' link in the clickboard and then 'Copy Link location' to get the 'Kittens Pictures' URL into clipboard. You could also have used 'Kittens Pictures' entry in the A-Z index to do this and you could even have a separate Netscape window open with the A-Z index if you are doing lots of linking as you are now. Now go to the 'kittens' page and click Link + Link Kittens to target' and that's it. There are other ways to link pages but I think I covered it in another email. Work your way down the blueprint covering all the 'link to this' entries in the same fashion. However if there was a level-3 or more, it would be better to do page linking in the same level by level way as for making new pages. NOTE: more levels ----------------- This site is a small site and goes only to level-2 topics. For bigger sites there can be deeper nesting to level-3 and possibly even more levels. If this were the case then after finishing level-2 you would go back to the top of the blueprint and do level-3 in the same way and so on.
